Saguaro at night

As we have been updating our web page, I have been spending a lot more time thinking about technology and the church, and even technology and theology in general. I think it is very important that the church keep itself up-to-date and relevant, but to what expense do we participate in the cold and personally absent world of computer communication?

When more people want you to communicate with them over Facebook or through text messages than a phone call, what are we implicitly saying? I understand, as I more often than not want to communicate in ways that require the least amount of time. This means texting and Facebook are in, but I wonder, does it take away from the relationship building that is so important to church?

And if you go even further, what about church online? Sure, it is simple and easy. Download a sermon, listen to a service, but how much can we participate in the full body of Christ when we are only downloading knowledge or downloading God? Or my friends, is presence reflected only through our own openness? Can we be present and not open to hearing a message? Can we not be present, but totally get it?

I suppose in the end if we are letting technology get in the way of community and theology, we are doing God an injustice, but if it is something that comes second, something that enhances our ability to feel the presence of God in our worlds than why not?

I hope that you enjoy this newly updated website. We would love to hear from you, so contact us through the website or come in and visit! You can always catch me at heather@saguarochristian.org
