Our Mission Statement
Christ has called Saguaro Christian Church to build a home to serve God and all people through growth and healing in ourselves and the community beyond our front doors.
Saguaro Christian Church
Saguaro Christian Church was founded in 1961by three families interested in starting a congregation on the eastside of Tucson. We are part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a nationally recognized mainline protestant denomination. Starting in a school, the church grew under the leadership of a few. The church finally purchased the land where the church is currently located. It began with one large main building and a smaller education building. More recently the current sanctuary and new education wing were built. Just five years the offices were built and the library renovated. From three families to a congregation of over 400 Saguaro is an active congregation in this community, our region and the national denominational structure.
Disciples of Christ
As part of the the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s table as God has welcomed us. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or Disciples was founded in the early 1800’s in the United States and today make up nearly 3,800 congregations. Disciples congregations are self governing and as unique as all the individuals that make them up. Worship services may be formal or informal and include lay women and men in leadership. Diversity of opinion is common throughout the congregations as we continue to grow in diversity.
We confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world, requiring nothing more – and nothing less – as a basis of our life together. Disciples hold the centrality of scripture, recognizing that each person has the freedom – and the responsibility – to study God’s Word within the community of the church. We practice the baptism of believers, which emphasizes that God’s grace demands a response of faith and discipleship, while also recognizing the baptism performed in other churches.
We affirm and rejoice in the gifts of the Holy Spirit – which include the gift of leadership – that God has given for the common good, and so we believe that all persons are called by God to do service and work in the church as lay persons lead in worship and various ministries in each congregation. As Disciples, we participate in God’s mission for the world, working with partners to heal the brokenness of creation and bring justice and peace to the whole human family. We hear a special calling to make visible the unity of all Christians, proclaiming that in our diversity we belong to one another because we commonly belong to Christ.
